Marco Polo: fact or fiction?
Article Abstract:
Frances Wood's "Did Marco Polo Go to China?" is seen as heresy by some scholars devoted to the notion that the Italian visited China in the 13th century. Wood bases her critique on Polo's failure to describe inventions and peculiarities that history now knows were present in China but that would have been new to a European. Some evidence does support the belief that he visited China, but that knowledge may be based on his family's travels to Mongolia. Controversy aside, Marco Polo's "Description of the World" is a remarkable historical record of the period.

Article Abstract:
The introduction of illuminated advertising in China has been accompanied by a range of difficulties. Many of the country's large cities now have illuminated advertising, but in many cases this is not proving as effective as it could be because it quickly becomes very dirty. Problems with electrical currents can lead to light bulbs failing rapidly, and profits from illuminated advertising are being negatively affected by the requirement for some space to be used for Communist Party propaganda.
