Mass movement: Pope sends a message to China's Catholics
Article Abstract:
Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass with two million people and prayed with a delegation from the official Chinese Catholic church, which does not recognize papal authority, during his Jan 1995 visit to Manila, Philippines. He also broadcast a taped message to Chinese Catholics proclaiming his authority, even as relations between China and the Vatican appear to be improving. The Pope also criticized the Philippines' non-Catholic leaders and backed the country's archbishop's stand against contraceptives.

Article Abstract:
Military leaders in Thailand have not objected to the government's reduced spending policy on military equipment even though they are used to large defence budgets. The slashed expenditure budget is intended to bring the country's gross domestic product (GDP) back into line. The policy will reduce GDP from 8.2% in 1996 to 7% in 1997. Numerous military projects have been cancelled including a one billion American dollar satellite project.
