Matsushita's net falls in weak economy

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. posted a major decline in its profits for the year ending on March 31, 1999. The company's poor performance is a reflection of the bleak electronics industry in Japan. Matsushita posted a 48% fall in net profits to 66.3 billion yen ($536.6 million). This did not include a one-time charge related to taxes. The company's net profits dropped 86% with the tax charge.
