Mauritius airport redevelopment completed

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius was reopened in Aug 2000 after undergoing an extensive renovation at a total cost of US$15 million. The airport improvements include new executive lounges and departure and arrival lounges; new luggage conveyor belts; new airside restaurant and food courts; improved airport security; new immigration, customs and police facilities; and new duty-free shops. State agency Airports of Mauritius has engaged the services of UK airport operator BAA for the management of the airport and the duty-free shops for a five-year period.

Atlanta maintains top spot

Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, GA, is the world's busiest airport in 1999, handling 78 million passengers. The growth in passenger traffic at Hartsfield is credited to Delta Air Lines, which makes 660 daily departures and another 240 departures through its subsidiary Atlantic Southeast Airlines. Delta accounts for 73% of movements in the airport in 1999, followed only by AirTran Airways at 11%. The airline uses Hartfield in providing 10 daily waves of connections with almost 100 destination served to air travelers.
