Minsk II first to Category III
Article Abstract:
The International Civil Aviation Organization has given a Category III landing certificate to the Minsk II International Airport in the Belarus. The Minsk II is equipped with a new modern airport lighting system made up of 1,000 flush-mounted lights that are installed in the main runway and taxiways. The lights can operate up to 4,000 hours and is controlled by a computer-aided monitoring system. The airport is also using the Brite 2 surface movement guidance and control system, which guides aircraft to their docking or parking positions.

A new Turkish gateway

The Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, which is only 40 km from the city center of Istanbul, Turkey, is expected to open by the end of Oct 2000. The Sabiha can handle 3 million international and 500,000 domestic passengers as well as 90,000 tons of cargo annually. It has a 3-km runway while the passenger terminal is equipped with 22 check-in counters, eight boarding gates, 28 passport control booths, 16 x-ray machines and two departure halls. The airport is named after Turkey's first female air force pilot, Sabiha Gocken.

Multi-billion investment for Washington Dulles..
Article Abstract:
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is undertaking several multi-billion dollar construction projects at Washington Dulles International Airport. Dulles was the fastest-growing major airport in the world in 1999, with a 26% increase in the number of passengers handled. The new construction projects being planned include a permanent concourse with 44 aircraft gates to replace the temporary Concourse C/D; a new runway; passenger walkways with moving sidewalks; and an underground railway system.
