An analysis of falls in the hospital: can we do without bedrails?
Article Abstract:
The use of bedrails in hospital beds does not necessarily reduce the risk of injury. Researchers compared the rate of falls near the bed and all falls among patients and staff before and after a policy change in bedrail use. Patient fall rates at a 135-bed New Zealand hospital did not change much after one year of reducing bedrail use. However, the change produced fewer serious injuries, including head injuries.
