Merck begins looking outside for possible successor to CEO

Drug maker Merck and Company Inc. is in the process of choosing an executive search firm to help it replace outgoing chief executive officer Raymond Gilmartin. The company's decision to begin the recruitment process is seen as taking place sooner than expected. There is speculation that the recall of its popular painkiller Vioxx may have prompted the company to speed up Mr. Gilmartin's departure.
