Mergers' India connection: Merrill joins rivals in outsourcing grunt work

Merrill Lynch and Company Inc. has purchased a stake in India's Copal Partners for $11 mil, becoming the third major bank to do so after Citigroup Inc. and Deutsche Bank AG. The three investment banks together own a quarter of the Indian outsourcing firm. Merrill will use Copal's deal research services.

Carlyle to buy Numericable, Completel stake

US-based private equity company Carlyle Group L.P. will buy a 35% stake in French cable operator Numericable and its sister unit, telecommunications provider CompleTel, for $1.44 bil. The deal involves Carlyle acquiring half of the 70% stake owned by Cinven Group Ltd.
