Messages from the Hall of Tortured Souls
Article Abstract:
A number of surprises have been hidden in computer programs, mainly for programmers, but also accessible by the general public. Computer programmer, David Wolf, has set up a web site called eeggs.com which has collected some 1,000 of these surprises, sometimes called Easter eggs. Programmers can obtain recognition through Easter eggs, and companies selling software may be unaware of Easter eggs sold with them. They may accept Easter eggs so long as there are not problems such as libel involved.

Venture communism
Article Abstract:
Red Hat plans a stock flotation and will be the first company with an income from 'open source' software to have a public stock listing. Caldera Systems is also planning a flotation, while venture capitalists in Silican Valley have invested in start-ups in open-source products. Red Hat distributes Linux which has around 12 million users. Venture capitalists are insuring themselves since Linux could rival Windows from Microsoft, and open-source could become more widespread.

The importance of being American
Article Abstract:
The US is far and away the world's leader in computer software manufacturing with approximately 75% of worldwide sales. Reasons for this dominance stem from the fact that computing began in the US and grew the fastest there. Another reason is that the international language of computing is english.
