Article Abstract:
Ecuador's failure to pay interest on a number of its bonds portends a poor relationship between that country and private creditors in the future. The consequences of this decision may not be addressed by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank since Ecuador is not considered essential to the international economy. The country's considerable financial problems make the matter of cleaning up a virtually collapsed economy quite a complex and complicated challenge.

Mexican retailers predict flat or declining sales for 1999
Article Abstract:
Retail stores in Mexico project flat or lower sales in 1999 and will modify buying and advertising expenditures accordingly. Interest rate increases and the financial problems experienced by Asia and Russia reduced retail growth in 1998 to 2.7% from a projected 7%. Although major stores such as Kmart and Sears have indicated plans to shift operations, some retailers have actually expanded operations for 1999, including food retailer Comerci.
