Middle East
Article Abstract:
Deregulation and liberalization are likely to be boosted in Israel following the electoral victory of the Likud in 1996. Regional economic growth could be affected by the impact of the elections on the peace process in the Middle East. Regional governments in the Gulf have been aided by higher prices for gas and oil. A drop in prices could follow the return of Iraq to the international petroleum market, and this could lead to reduced financial support for governments with greater risk of internal political problems.

The fourth economic conference of the Middle East and North Africa may not be held as scheduled in Nov 1997 due to reluctance of some participants to be seen to support Israeli economic integration. Meanwhile, Jordan is carrying out economic liberalization measures affecting areas such as privatization, exchange controls and foreign investment in stocks.
