China International Trust and Investment Corp (Citic) founder RongYiren is set to retire after presiding over the conglomerate since 1979. The departure of a key figure such as Rong is expected to significantly affect Citic's future even as it plans to diversify towards financial services, trading and property operations. The sprawling conglomerate is currently burdened by losing state enterprises and by the departure of middle-level managers.

China International Trust and Investment Corp (Citic) is bent on boosting itsinternational presence. Citic Pacific, the listed arm of Citic Hongkong, recently announced its issuance of HK$7.2 billion of new shares to finance a major investment package. The share placement will finance the acquisition of Citic Hongkong's 12% stake in Hongkong Telecommunications plus shares in two mainland China power stations.

Wang Jun is likely to succeed Rong Yiren as chairman of China International Trust and Investment Corp (Citic). Wang started out at Citic in 1979 as the general manager of its business department and was promoted to vice-president in 1986. He was moved up to senior first vice-president in 1992.Company officials attribute Wang's rapid rise on his ability, experience and family connections.
