Sovereign right: respect for monarchy is a hallowed tradition

Lese majeste, insulting the royal family, and other crimes against the Thai monarchy are a declining problem for foreigners but still occasionally land one in jail. French businessman Lech Tomacz Kisielwicz was tried but released after uttering angry words next to a Thai princess on an airplane. Thai citizens, many of whom adore their monarchs, still face relatively stiff penalties for lese majeste, but those will gradually decline in coming years.

Time of trial: former prime minister Anand faces prison term
Article Abstract:
Anand Panyarachun could go to prison for non-feasance while prime minister of Thailand. He has been charged with misconduct in office by former Thai Supreme Court judge Pravit Khamparat. Pravit says that Anand stopped his political promotion just before Anand retired as prime minister in 1992. If convicted, Anand could serve five years in jail, but he has many supporters in and out of government.
