The US film industry earned a record $2.2 billion in the first five months of 1996, an 18% increase over 1995. However, due to economies of scale, Walt Disney plans to cut its production from an average of 35 to 20 films per year. Live-action films will be the likely target of the cuts.

The Japanese motion picture industry has been hurt by declining box-office sales and foreign multiplex competition. Shochiku is the only Japanese firm that still produces and distributes films on a large scale, and its operating profits fell 37% for the year ending Mar 31, 1997.
