The UK has a strong watercolour heritage, but too often watercolour painting is stifled by a rigid focus on tradition and rules. The UK should take note of Austria, which has seen a revival in watercolour since the 1980s. An awareness and appreciation of watercolour elsewhere in Europe is vital.
