Troubled waters: international oil firms in middle of Burma battle
Article Abstract:
International oil companies working on projects on Burma come under fire from anti-government human rights activists. Two companies, France's Total and US-based Unocal are partnering with the Myanmar state oil firm and the Petroleum Authority of Thailand. Detractors say that the firms should leave because their money supports only the junta. The oil firms contend that benefit the economy and create local jobs. The activists say either forced labor is used or only government supporters are hired, and that soldiers guarding the projects abuse people.

Back to school: government moves to boost education for the poor
Article Abstract:
Thailand's government is launching a plan to boost education among its younger workers in the hope of sustaining the country's economic boom. The program will include extending compulsory education from six to nine years, creating a fund of 20 billion baht to help finance private schools outside greater Bangkok, and making loans to poor students. In all, the government plans to invest 37 billion baht. Economic growth in Thailand has heretofore been driven by low-wage labor, but industrialization has made that less important.
