Mixed motives: fear and prospect of profits colour Asean view of China
Article Abstract:
Assn of South East Asian Nations (Asean) is seeking better economic and political ties with China, as indicated by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad's journey to Peking on Jun 14, 1993. Mahathir and Chinese Premier Li Peng agreed that China and Asean need to resist Western subversion. China's rapidly growing economic clout and emergence as a major power have enticed Asean to seek closer relations. Asean concerns on such issues as China's aggressive claim to the Spratly and Paracel islands have also reinforced suspicions of China's strategic objectives.

Coping with the critics
Article Abstract:
Environment, human rights and democracy are three policy areas critical to the meeting between European Community (EC) and Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers in Manila on Oct 30-31, 1992. ASEAN countries feel these three areas have been forced on them by the West since the end of the Cold War. The meeting is the last chance to resolve problems with the new EC-ASEAN trade and cooperation agreement due for signing in 1993.
