Modelling resource availability in general hospitals: design and implementation of a decision support model
Article Abstract:
A decision support system which was designed based on a statistical model for the prediction of resource availability is a useful approach in admission planning for hospital decision makers. Admission planning pertains to the selection of elective patients from a waiting list to achieve optimal utilization of available beds, nursing staff and operating room facilities while considering emergency admissions. Three different hospital situations were used to test the approach, from which sufficiently accurate results were obtained.

Analysis of capacity management of the intensive care unit in a hospital
Article Abstract:
The admission and discharge processes at an intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital have been analyzed using queuing and computer simulation models. The objective is to optimize the utilization of the ICU's capacity and improve the quality of care provided to patients. Results show that the existing capacity of 14 beds is sufficient to accommodate patients at the current arrival rates. However, the managerial aspects of the ICU's operations must be addressed to improve its capacity.
