Moderates
Article Abstract:
Tony Blair's July 1997 decision to meet with two Irish loyalist groups is not as controversial as it may seem, because leaders of the two groups support compromise to resolve the problems in Northern Ireland. Leaders of the Progressive Unionist Party and Ulster Democratic Party both believe that the mainstream unionists have caused problems within the union. Both groups encourage a sharing of power between unionists and nationalists as talks continue with Sinn Fein.

The legacy of Drumcree
Article Abstract:
The Protestant Orange Order's summer 1996 marches through Catholic enclaves in Northern Ireland have done serious damage to the peace process. Moderates on both sides have been marginalized by extremists. The behavior of Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble at Drumcree was especially reprehensible.
