Kenyan Pres Daniel arap Moi faces a major challenge in trying to ensure the re-election of his Kenya African National Union party when he steps down in 2002. Moi is a master at manipulating political and tribal loyalties, and as yet he has not said who he intends to nominate to succeed him.

President Daniel arap Moi is planning to introduce multi-party democracy to Kenya in order to stem violence between tribes. The Kalenjin tribe is has been involved in much of the rioting, which has arisen from clashes over land and other tribal grievances.
