Monsanto earnings climb 34% on strong pharmaceutical sales

Monsanto Co. posted an improvement of 34% in its earnings for the second-quarter of 1999. The earnings figure was higher than what analysts had predicted. Monsanto was helped by an ongoing rise in pharmaceutical sales and by strong demand for the company's Roundup herbicide. Monsanto posted $344 million (322.9 million euros) in net income for the quarter. During the same period in 1998, the company posted $257 million.
