Abbott profit rises, but drug sales lag

Abbott Laboratories posted a 9.8% improvement in its earnings for the second-quarter of 1999. The company posted the higher earnings despite the fact that its pharmaceutical division's sales declined. Abbott's earnings matched what analysts had predicted. For the quarter, the company reported an net income increase to $642.7 million ($631.5 million euros). Abbott's sales also rose 5.8% to $3.24 billion.
