The Hong Kong government plans to spend HK$2 bn on transport developments in the next 20 years. The investment will involve massive railway and highway projects in order to cope with the pace of urban development. A major part of the long-term transport development will include the West Rail, KCR Tsim Sha Tsui extension and future rail links in Ma On Shan and Tseung Kwan O. The government is also proposing to advance the planning process and the starting time for building new transport infrastructure projects. *

Drastic measures to put railways back on thefasy track

In order to stimulate national economic development, the Ministry of Railways plans to invest 45 bn yuan in railway in 1998. Within the next five years, 250 bn yuan will be invested in the construction of 5,430 km of new lines, the laying of 2,580 km of double tracks and the electrification of 4,400 km of existing lines. Besides, the railway system has been overstaffed. Thus, the ministry will cut its 3.35 mn workforce by 42%. *
