Article Abstract:
Morgan Grenfell private equity (MGPE) are planning to expand their operation into Germany, with the help of their parent company Deutsche Bank. They intend to focus on the larger buyouts in the future but plan to leave the management teams in charge of the businesses. They plan to raise 1.5 billion euros in Europe and the US, in order to finance transactions for more than $123 million. Morgan Grenfell intend to close down their fund in France, which was set up to invest in smaller businesses, in order to focus on larger deals. Graham Hutton has taken over as chief executive of MGPE.

HSBC Private Equity

Concentrating on the middle market is the way forward for HSBC Private Equity (PE), according to managing director Ian Forrest. HSBC PE raised over 1 billion pounds sterling during 1998, with the majority of deals in the 350 million pounds sterling to the 33 million pounds sterling range. The European market is attractive to HSBC PE because it is undergoing a period of restructuring, although the firm is approaching its markets with caution.

First PFI equity fund launched - will venture capitalists follow?

Innisfree is an equity fund that is targeting investment in the British government-backed private finance initiative (PFI). To date, it has raised 50 million pounds sterling and expects to reach its target of 100 million pounds sterling by end-April 1996. Investors include AMP Asset Management and Hermes Investment Management. The PFI is aimed at encouraging private funding of public sector projects, such as hospitals and prisons.
