Mugabe's battle
Article Abstract:
Zimbabwe faces high levels of interest rates, high inflation, and harvests are likely to drop as a result of land seizures. Zimbabwe is also involved in war in Congo, on the side of Congolese president, Laurent Kabila. International backing for land reform is likely to be undermined by the land seizures, though the International Monetary Fund may still deliver promised aid. Zimbabwe's economic problems are likely to intensify in 1999, which could mean a strikes and pressure for elections.
