Mugabe's last stand
Article Abstract:
Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe, is seeking to retain power, and there are doubts as to whether fair elections will be held as scheduled in May 2000. The economy has been hit by farm occupations encouraged by Mugabe to boost support for his ZANU-PF party. Respect for the law has suffered, as have race relations. High unemployment and inflation levels and a forecast of 2% economic contraction for 2000 have been attributed to corruption, though Mugabe blames natural forces, the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. There are fictitious names on the voters' roll and the counting process is lengthy and could be rigged.

Countdown in Zimbabwe
Article Abstract:
Zimbabwe has been affected by a political crisis, and this is almost wholly the fault of the ruling ZANU-PF party and President Robert Mugabe. Zimbabwe is suffering from high unemployment, foreign debt levels and inflation, gasoline shortages, and a drop in the value of the currency. The government is using land ownership as a political tool, and has not previously been interested in land reform. There will be problems if elections are not free, both for Zimbabweans and for neighboring countries.

Zimbabwe's non-farmers
Article Abstract:
Land reform is needed in Zimbabwe, but settlers need help, and a program that simply rewards political loyalty with land and provides no support is likely to damage the country's economy.
