NAL SET TO EMBARK ON A SLEW OF R&D PROJECTS
Article Abstract:
National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) of Bangalore will invest Rs100 crore over the next 3-4 years on infrastructure upgradation. It will begin research and development (R&D) projects in multi-sensor data function and corrosion arresting methods. The funds may come from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), federal agencies and private organisations. NAL also plans to enter into air safety projects such as satellite based aircraft navigation. Other research areas include fluid dynamics, flow diagnostics in wind tunnel measurements, parallel processing and smart structures. Saras, the light transport aircraft, will be test-flown by the end of 1999. Hamsa, another light aircraft, may be offered, at subsidised rates, to flying clubs after it is approved by the middle of 1999. (nr)

BHARAT STARCH LOSING STEAM
Article Abstract:
The director's report of Bharat Starch Industries Ltd for the year 1996-97 carried a statement that the diversification programme of setting up a 20,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) citric acid plant had already been commissioned in May 1997. But the same director's report in the balance sheet for 1997-98 envisages that the unit is unlikely to go on stream before October 1998. This means that the company is expected to incur heavy cost overruns in its citric acid unit. The total capital cost of the project has been revised to around Rs262 crore in the latest report. (gsh)
