NEC rides Internet boom
Article Abstract:
NEC has announced plans of entering the Internet service provider market, which will bring it head-to-head once more with rival Fujitsu. The plan comes in the wake of huge losses suffered by NEC. The firm's Internet strategy closely parallels that of its main competitor in terms of the alliance it has forged and services it offers. While Fujitsu formed an alliance with Siemens, NEC partnered with Cie. des Machines Bull of France. In terms of services, NEC has lined itself up as a business solutions provider, a catchword among Japan's electronic manufacturers.

KDDI develops new strategy to take on NTT DoCoMo
Article Abstract:
Japanese telecommunications company KDDI announced a plan to compete with Nippon Telegraph and Telephone subsidiary NTT DoCoMo in the mobile phone market. KDDI plans to drastically decrease its debt by 2005, trim its 52 member board of directors to a more manageable number, and focus its energies on its "au" phones, phones that KDDI belives can outperform NTT phones. Some investors and analysts remain skeptical that KDDI will succeed with the execution of the plan.
