NEW DUTY REGIME TO ENTICE CAR COS INTO INDIGENISATION
Article Abstract:
The Government of India plans to introduce new duty norms for the automobile industry. The new policies will encourage foreign car manufacturers in India to adopt indigenisation at a faster pace. The government plans to reduce excise duty on domestic components which will bring down manufacturing costs of local manufacturers. It also plans to increase customs duty on imports of completely knocked down/semi knocked down kits which will support indigenous manufacturing. The new excise and customs policy is likely to be implemented in the forthcoming budget. Locally produced cars like Maruti, Indica and other brands which have high level of indigenisation are likely to be the main beneficiaries of the new policy. (gs)(vr)
