NHL TV deal sparks waiting and seeing

Bell ExpressVu's Centre Ice pay-per-view package of over 800 games with the National Hockey League has found two rivals who have Centre Ice plans of their own. It is not clear how much new hockey that will be provided by co-axial cable firm Rogers Cablesystems and direct-to-home satellite provider Star Choice will affect the properties that already on air. Observers, however, are adapting a wait-and-see attitude towards the Centre Ice situation.

Aboriginal TV channel gets CRTC nod

The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network obtained approval from the CRTC on Feb 22, 1999, to operate as the newest specialty service in Canada. The startup is required to be carried by direct-to-home satellite operations as well as cable distributors, multipoint signal providers such as Look Communications. The Aboriginal Peoples Television will adopt general interest programming that features aboriginal perspectives.
