NO TIME FOR THE GOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL
Article Abstract:
The price of gold, which was $270.75 per troy ounce, has increased to $295-296. It has remained steady below $300 per ounce till now due to higher sales by South Africa, Canada and Australia. The total demand for gold in the world was 676.3 tonnes in the third quarter (July-September 1998) against the demand of 679.7 tonnes estimated by the World Gold Council report for the third quarter of 1997. The demand for gold in the first quarter of 1998 was 406.6 tonnes (against 752.6 tonnes in the first quarter of 1997). The demand for gold was 629.3 tonnes in the second quarter of 1998 (698 tonnes). The total demand from the developing markets was 468.5 tonnes in the third quarter of 1998 - 6 percent lesser than that in the third quarter of 1997. The demand for gold from 25 important markets fell by 20 percent at 1,712.2 tonnes in the first 9 months of 1998. (rk)

GLOBAL JUTE OUTPUT LIKELY TO FALL
Article Abstract:
Global jute output is expected to decline to 2.9 million tonnes in 2005 AD against 3.4 million tonnes in 1996-97. Jute production in India, which accounts for 50 percent of the global output, is projected to increase to 1.5 million tonnes in 2005 AD. The country is expected to increase its yield to 1,900 kg per hectare by 2005 AD but the area under jute cultivation will reduce to 7.9 lakh hectares from 8.5 lakh hectares now due to pressure from competing crops.
