THE FLY IN A COSTLY BREW?
Article Abstract:
High excise duty and sales tax has resulted in fall in beer consumption in Karnataka. According to the figures of the Excise Department, the beer consumption was 290.83 lakh bulk litres (315 lakh bulk litres in April-October 1997). The excise earnings from beer, however, rose by 17.5 percent to Rs17.62 crore from Rs14.99 crore. The rise is attributed to increase in the duty by Re1 per litre. THE PACKAGING THAT WENT WRONG
Article Abstract:
India's flexible packaging industry, consisting of polyester films, BOPP films and converters, has grown into a Rs2300 crore industry. The country's total capacity in polyester films is over 1.3 lakh tonnes per annum but the demand is only one third of that. This excess has reduced the prices of polyester films to one third of the Rs1.5 lakh per tonne in 1995. The US has also withdrawn the generalised systems of preference for polyester films imported from India. The producers of BOPP films have also been affected with the decline in international prices from $2.4 per kg to about $1.3 per kg. (khr)
