Article Abstract:
The Danish group KJ, Esbjerg, has developed an IT-based product information system for slaughter-houses. The system allows storage of all information about cattle and other farm animals, and the aim is to present this information for consumers on product labels. It also facilitates the tracking of salmonella, BSO and other diseases. In the long term, the system enables presenting information about the origin of meat etc. on the Internet. The Finnish slaughter-house company Atria is the first company to introduce the system, and is investing DKr 25mn (USD 3.6mn) in the project.

The Danish consumer goods retail sector is highly concentrated, according to a study by the German institute Ifo. 68.7% of turnover in the consumer goods retail sector is attributed to the three largest chains. Among the European Union countries, this share is exceeded only by Finland, 84%, and Sweden, 78.2%. The concentration rate is lowest in Greece, 25.7%, Italy, 33.1%, and the UK, 39.8%.
