Article Abstract:
The Hungarian market for mobile telephones is growing fast. At present, 7% of Hungarians have a mobile phone. Already 29% of private entrepreneurs and managers, 17% of higher employees and 10% of students own a mobile phone. In 1997, the three network operators Westel 450 Radiotelefon Kft, Westel 900 Rt and Pannon GSM generated a turnover of Ft 105bn and invested Ft 35bn. Similar investments are planned for 1998. According to the Hungarian ministry of infrastructure, the installation of 1,800-MHz networks is to be put out to tender in the second half of 1998. At present, almost all phones and equipment are imported to Hungary. Now, Nokia of Finland is planning to build a mobile phone factory in Hungary and start the production of GSM 900 and GSM 1800 phones at the end of 1999. Nokia has recently opened a research and development centre in Budapest. The Finnish firm has a market share of about 50% in Hungary's GSM phone market and is the main supplier of Pannon GSM. In 1997, the company's turnover in the mobile phone sector amounted to Ft 20bn. Another Ft 45bn was generated in the computer monitor factory in Pecs.

General Electric is continuing to invest in Hungary. It will build a US$ 27mn plant in Ozd to produce small electronic and fine-mechanical components. Production is to start in the first half of 1999. However, expansion of the plant is already planned and it will reach full capacity in 2004. Another US$ 50mn will be invested for Tungsram, the bulb producer. About US$ 10mn is for a new halogen lamp unit in Kisvarda. Another new plant will be built in Hajdub sz rmeny to manufacture wolfram filament for the Kisvarda unit.
