National Stadium engineer demands built-in character
Article Abstract:
Ove Arup's Alistair Lanczner believes that new stadia should be in keeping with their location, and that seating should be gently curving rather than parallel banks along the touchlines. He feels that tiered stands should be steeper than the recommended 35 degrees and that retractable tier seating should be used so that stadia can be used for football and athletics. He hopes that the new national stadium at Wembley will avoid design-and-build.

National Stadium: Keeps twin towers, but no retractable roof
Article Abstract:
The English National Stadium Development Company has ruled out a retractable roof for the new National Stadium at Wembley, claiming that none of the sporting bodies who will use the stadium want one. The 220 million pounds sterling stadium will provide facilities for rugby league, athletics and football. It will be designed by an architect, to be chosen by competitive interview, and shortlisted teams are believed to be Arup Associates, Foster and Partners/HOK/Lobb partnership and Michael Hopkins and Partners.
