Article Abstract:
Approximately 8% of Romanians carry the often-deadly hepatitis-B virus because of past practices of giving children frequent shots and blood transfusions. A vaccine could prevent new cases, but the ability to keep a cold chain is limited, and medical personnel still reuse syringes.

Laws passed in the early 1990s limiting immigrants and refugees has slowed the flow of immigrants into Western Europe, but already-established immigrants are finding it easier to integrate. Joblessness and birth rates are still higher among immigrants, but are coming down.
