Neighbours forever: Canberra's campaign to woo Jakarta is bearing fruit
Article Abstract:
Australia's relations with Indonesia have improved. Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating believes that personal contact between leaders, common diplomatic endeavors as in Cambodia and mutual caution are preferable means of dealing with issues such as human rights than the more confrontational approach favored by his predecessors. Australian Foreign Minister Gareth Evans and his Indonesian counterpart, Ali Alatas, have done much to smooth away tensions by their ability to work together. The 1989 agreement to develop the Timor Gap clearly opened the way to further cooperation.

Distant neighbours
Article Abstract:
There are a number of indications that relations between Singapore and Indonesia are becoming more strained. Singaporean leaders have taken on a more passive role in organizing international economic assistance for Indonesia, and have not expressed unreserved support for Indonesian President B.J. Habibie. It now seems unlikely that Singapore will make economic assistance available to Indonesia unless this country gives guarantees that the money will be used effectively and will be repaid.
