Article Abstract:
Suzuki and General Motors are to co-operate to develop and build a small car in Hungary and Poland. Production is to start in 2000. Suzuki is to build the car in Hungary, GM in Poland. Suzuki will produce 50,000 units per year and sell them under the name Suzuki. They will have a 1.3 litres Suzuki engine. GM's car will be equipped with a 1.0 litre or 1.2 litre Opel engine. Investments required are estimated at US$ 100-150mn. Car body parts will be produced jointly. The cars are for export. Suzuki is targeting current Swift users, while GM targets the East European market.

Ikarus, the Hungarian bus manufacturer, is considering to manufacture small cars with less than 1,000 cc. The company is in talks with Suzuki and Kia for the project. Gabor Szeles, who owns Ikarus, estimates to sell 10,000 units of the car in Hungary per year. Ikarus is also in talks with Kia and Nissan to manufacture a sportive off-road car. It also considers to manufacture small buses in co-operation with Nissan. Ikarus will produce 2,200 of its traditional buses in 1998, and 3,000 in 1999.

Czechia is changing the fertiliser law in September 1998 to meet EU requirements. In 1997, Czechia imported phosphorous fertiliser worth KC 137mn and potassium fertiliser worth KC 349mn. There were nearly no exports of those two sorts for fertiliser. Czechia exported nitrogen fertiliser worth KC 2.280bn and imports were KC 1.437bn. The largest fertiliser company is Lovochemie a.s., Lovosice. The company had sales of KC 2.7bn in 1997. It produces mainly nitrogen fertiliser.
