Although statistics indicate the British economy is still in recession, other economic indicators show the average voter there is doing quite well. Speculation that this is not a good time for the Tories to be facing an election because of the economy may be overstated.

The recession that plagues the British economy in summer 1992 may be abating. Employment is trending upward, consumer confidence can be expected to increase as interest rates fall, and UK industrial productivity is strongly up since 1991.

Economists can forecast more recession or recovery depending on which statistics they examine. In the near future retail sales, construction and engineering profits will be down but automobile sales may go up. Statistics are analysed.
