New city isn't a capital idea, Malaysian critics complain
Article Abstract:
Opposition groups and public interest organizations are denouncing the Putrajaya project of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad as just another attempt at prestige, questioning what they allege is a waste of public funds amid the deterioration of public services such as medical care and housing. The project involves the development of Putrajaya as Malaysia's new administrative capital, with a green-domed complex to serve as office of Dr Mahathir and his staff of 850. It will also have a mosque, a banquet hall and state rooms for foreign dignitaries.
