New era for Britain and China
Article Abstract:
The animosity between China and Great Britain during the handover of Hong Kong has abated and relations seemed positively cordial during the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group meeting held on 2-3 December 1997. The two sides shared a press conference and Britain has said that it is satisfied with the way in which China has permitted Hong Kong to retain its autonomy. One area of disagreement was over Vietnamese refugees. China wants Britain to accept responsibility for them but Britain argues that it is no longer a ruling power and that China must deal with them.

Peking quotes Deng to show scorn for Sino-British accord
Article Abstract:
Chinese officials have been quoting Deng Xiaoping's statement from 1982 concerning China's rule over Hongkong, leading many to suspect that China will attempt to take over Hongkong before the treaty date of 1997. The quote says, in effect, that China will reconsider the date and method in resuming control over Hongkong if the area is experiencing serious chaos. Most people see the threat as an attempt to exact more concessions from Britain at the negotiating table and a sign that the Chinese have chosen not to honor the Sino-British accord.

Peking gains upper hand over Hong Kong on talks
Article Abstract:
Political analysts think that China is calling the shots in its formal talks with Britain. Peking is reportedly in control of the situation such that they determine whether they want to negotiate or not and, if they do, when they want to have the talks. According to observers this seems to be the result of Britain's over-eagerness to hold talks regarding the political fate of Hong Kong. Peking, on the other hand, has recognized its psychological advantage so that it may be deliberately stalling talks.
