Virtual reality: moves to rejoin UN, recognise Mongolia
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's legislature is urging the Kuomintang (KMT) government to improve the island's international status by seeking to re-enter the UN and by recognizing Mongolia's independence. However, mainland China's UN veto power and sensitivity on the question of who speaks for all of China may make Taiwanese membership in the UN difficult to achieve. Taiwan may therefore seek participation rather than membership. Recognition of Mongolian independence, granted in 1946 but revoked in 1952, is opposed by some KMT veterans who fear it would invigorate Taiwan's independence movement.
