A question of balance
Article Abstract:
The Far East forms Germany's second largest export market. Demand for German goods has been hit by the 1997 financial crisis, but German exports to the region grew by 7.4% in 1996, and German machinery exports to Asean countries increased by 450% in the 10 years to 1997. The increase in exports, coupled with a lower increase in imports from the Asia-Pacific region, has reduced Germany's trade deficit with the region to 11.8 billion marks. German companies had invested 13.1 billion marks in the region by 1995. Japanese and Korean companies are the major investors in Germany.
