New industrial base awaits upturn in orders
Article Abstract:
Germany's industrial infrastructure has become one of the most modern in the world as capital investment pours in to convert former state conglomerates into modern private industries. What they need now is a global economic recovery to generate more factory orders. One example of the modernity of many of the plants in the region is the new GM Opel factory, which can produce 150,000 cars annually with a workforce of only 2,000. The ease with which investors can set up manufacturing centers in Germany is cited as the one reason Germany is making such a quick post-unification recovery.

A hint of better times
Article Abstract:
Germany is showing signs of economic recovery after three straight years of dismal corporate profits. Signs suggest that a full export-led recovery could be under way by the second half of 1994. The main factor in ensuring the continuation of the recovery is the easing of Bundesbank monetary policy. German manufacturers are benefitting from a relaxation of corporate tax laws and their own cost-cutting measures. Factory capacity is down as is the production of autos and machinery, but when the economy gets rolling Germany should be an export power.
