Lost incentive: Japanese investors turn away from Uncle Sam
Article Abstract:
Reports show that Japanese investment in US businesses and properties fell by 75% in 1991. Analysts point to several possible causes, including favorable investment opportunities in other regions. The weakness of both economy and stock and property performance may also be contributors to the Japanese bearish tendency toward the US investment scene. One factor which cannot be discounted is the hostile reception for Japanese investment in the US. Expected rallies by the recovering US economy may not be enough to induce increased Japanese investment activities.

What's in it for us?
Article Abstract:
Sony Corp Chairman Akio Morita's recent pronouncements on the need for a change in present Japanese policies towards its foreign trading partners drew considerable attention from the US and several Asian countries. However, observers in other countries have expressed scepticism about Morita's New Management Philosophy as outlined in the Japanese magazine Bungei Shunju. Japan's neighboring Asian countries are hoping that a change in Japanese economic policies will benefit trade between them and Japan.
