Rebuilding the future
Article Abstract:
The South Korean economy has been affected by bad debt which is undermining the banking system, and by increased competition in export markets. The conglomerates or chaebol are seeking more deregulation and lower interest rates. Links between government and business which affect bank lending decisions are seen as a cause of the banks' bad debt problems. Bank and finance company loans have reached 160% of gross domestic product. Meanwhile telecoms deregulation is seen as important for the development of hi-tech activities in South Korea.

Lean machine: Korean-Japanese venture battles the yen by stressing efficiency
Article Abstract:
Japanese investors in S Korea have fought the rising yen and spiralling wage increases, and now must face greater overseas competition. Japan's Mikuni Corp set up Mikuni R.K in 1987 in partnership with Rinnai Korea Corp, itself a joint venture between Japan's Rinnai Corp and a Korean company. Mikuni R.K has 70% of the market for thermocouples and magnetic-power units that make gas stoves safe, and its sales have averaged 12.1% growth annually since 1990. Its high efficiencies may not be enough to stave off newcomers, though.
