New light on ivory towers
Article Abstract:
Architectural practice Hodder Associates designed the new student's residence building at St Catherine's College in Oxford, England. The 54 student study-bedrooms each have their own bathrooms. The block is adjacent to the original buildings designed in 1962 by Arne Jacobsen. Jacobsen's designs are more formal and do not empathise with the nature of the site, and although Hodder's design refer to the original buildings there are substantial differences. Hodder makes a contrast between the private and public areas and there is no wall-to-wall glazing so as to reduce overheating problems.
