New minis rescue car makers
Article Abstract:
Mini vehicle sales in Japan have been brisk since a host of new models were unveiled in Oct 1998, despite weak automobile sales and general consumer demand. Sales of these smaller-than-compact cars, which have proven to be highly appealing to young people and first-time car buyers, have increased for three consecutive months. Dec 1998 sales, in fact, rose by an impressive 17.5% from the previous year's level. The popularity of minis is attributed to savings on taxes, insurance and maintenance costs, as well as their safety performance , improved mileage, greater power and larger interiors.

Toyota profit goal damped: Asian turmoil is expected to hurt earnings
Article Abstract:
Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. is the newest casualty of the Asian currency crisis, with the automaker's admission that consolidated net profits for the year ending March 31, 1998 will only amount to 465 bil yen, far below initial projection of 490 bil yen. Toyota's profits were pulled down by weak domestic and regional sales, and was rescued in part by exports to North America, where its luxury and sport-utility vehicles are enjoying good sales.

Foreign auto sales fall
Article Abstract:
Sales of foreign-manufactured vehicles in Japan plunged for the 10 consecutive month in January 1998 which offers a clear example of the economic contributors behind the country's mounting trade surplus. Sales of foreign auto vehicles plummet 36% in January 1998, to 15,457 vehicles, as opposed to 24, 178 in 1997. The radical drop in car sales is attributed to declining consumer confidence and doubts about the economy.
