New plan looks for balance
Article Abstract:
Malaysia is in the first phase of the National Development Policy (NDP), which sets the direction of economic development for the next 20 years and succeeds the New Economic Policy (NEP) launched in 1970 as a social and economic restructuring strategy. The NDP, with its emphasis on private sector-led growth, seeks the improvement of the management and entrepreneurial skills and the value systems of all sectors of Malay society to complement the gains of economic redistribution under the NEP. The need for a stable political backdrop has been ably filled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad.

Risky business: labour activist alleges government pressure
Article Abstract:
Zainal Rampak, president of the Malaysian Trade Union Congress, was forced by the government to resign as a leader of the opposition Semangat 46 party. Zainal claims that the government is practicing intimidation against organized labor in order to keep wages low. Cheap labor has been a main source of competitiveness for Malaysia. However, the government insists that his dual role as opposition party leader and labor organizer represent a conflict of interest, and that his methods have rendered certain union activities invalid.

Where has all the labour gone
Article Abstract:
The unemployment rate for Malaysia in the first 10 months of 1991 was pegged at 4.3%, its lowest in 10 years. With full employment expected for its 6.62 million-strong workforce by the end of the decade, manufacturers in the industrialized states are facing chronic labor shortages that are pushing up wages, such that some firms have offered new incentives to retain workers. The government decided in Oct 1991 to allow recruitment of foreign workers but instituted measures to ensure that Malaysians are not displaced.
