New research raises hope for treatment of asthma

Article Abstract:

Researchers have discovered a possible new way to treat asthma attacks by focusing on an out-of-control chemical messenger that may be the a fundamental cause of the disease. The researchers used an experimental drug from American Home Products Corp. to block the effects of IL-13, an immune molecule, which has been identified as the culpret in asthma attacks. Two research groups have provided information concerning this. Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Maryland and the University of California at San Francisco are both doing research in this area.

Sanofi pulls out ahead of Chiron on bird-flu drug

Article Abstract:

Sanofi Pasteur, a subsidiary of the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis S.A. is developing a vaccine for human-bird influenza. The research will near completion by the end of the year and is outpacing rival Chiron Corp.

Sanofi-Aventis profit rises on strong vaccine sales

Article Abstract:

Third-quarter net profit for French pharmaceutical firm Sanofi-Aventis S.A. rose 9.1% to $2.67 bil, helped by both lower costs and strong sales of the firm's vaccines. Total sales rose 1.8%.
